St Louis Carpenters Union Sues Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council Against Billboard Contracts

contractor home remodel

St. Louis's carpenters union has had a turbulent history dealing with local politicians as well as the city's business community. Al Bond was a former apprentice carpenter. This scandal is the latest. Bond, an ex-carpenter apprentice, used union funds in order to pay his personal expenses. The union fired Bond for allegedly abusing contract procedures. The union also faced difficulties with Billboard agreements and the lack of oversight.

Al Bond's life as an apprentice carpenter was a highlight of his career.

Al Bond worked many years for the St. Louis carpenters union. There he was elected on the labor council and then elected to the highest executive position. Since then, he has become an important member of the union, having served as its vice president and business representative/organizer. He also contributed thousands of dollar to local elections through his PAC. The union put its weight behind failed proposals to consolidate city and county government, privatize the airport, and merge the airport. In 2011, he was elected as a member of the St. Louis labor council. He also was elected to the Carpenters Local 5 board, where he served 11 years as the president.

Although the majority of Americans are focused upon Donald Trump's election victory, a number unions have taken steps towards protecting the rights of workers. Missouri's "Career Connections" program has been a great example of this. Career Connections, a nonprofit national organization that works with high schools in order to promote carpentry and its career options, is located in Missouri. It allows high school and college students to gain experience while attending college without incurring debt.

Billboard contracts with Interrail

Al Bond, the former president of Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council, has been sued to stop the union taking advantage of the boom in construction. Bond, who was once the leader of the St. Louis-based council signed $4 million worth of billboard contracts with Interrail. The union claims the agreement was illegal, and that the union made a profit from it.

In September, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, the union's parent organization, dissolved the St. Louis-Kansas City District Council and fired Bond. Bond fired his staff and the union's local managers in response to the suit and moved to Chicago. The Mid-America Regional Council of Carpenters was established. The lawsuit was brought to the attention of the U.S. District Court of Missouri.

Personal expenses: Use union funds

Carpenters Pension Trust Fund of St. Louis (multi-employer, defined-benefit union pension fund) is a multiemployer, defined-benefit union pension fund. It was created in 1969 under an agreement between the Carpenters union and three local building trades associations. The vacation checks are distributed to the fund each time members contribute a specific amount of money for every hour worked. It is important that you note that this fund does not pay for personal expenses. It is intended to provide retirement benefits and death benefits to Carpenters.

Bond is accused of using St. Louis Carpenters Union funds for personal purposes. It also claims Bond entered into questionable advertising agreements. A spokesman for the union did not respond to requests of comment. Boehms (Vice President at Interface Construction) did not respond to messages seeking comment. A spokesman for the union did not return messages regarding questions about Boehms' salary or personal expenses.

Lack of oversight of contracts with Interrail

Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council, which is based in Chicago, has been accused by the St. Louis council of stealing assets. The St. Louis Council was one the most important and influential unions in the area, which negotiated labor agreements for construction workers. However, the union denies the allegations. Bond's lawyer has declined to comment.

The bond also alleges that the St. Louis carpenters union failed to properly oversee contracts with Interrail, Foxpoint, and other construction companies. The bond states that six members of the St. Louis unit complained to national union officials. The union's financial records show that it had $3.6 billion in assets last year, despite the lack of oversight over the contracts.
